Representation of Women in Indian Advertisements
The most common
setting for ladies in TV advertisements is the domestic residence.
Men are probably generally shown to be seen outside the house. Commercials still show girls solely in their own homes. Once customers see
these pictures of girls they assume that girls' are solely restricted to
their homes whereas men
can do whatever they want to do. Men are shown doing skilled jobs like doctors or lawyers whereas girls do domestic work like cooking or house cleansing.
This points out that girls are shown as not having
occupations or not having greater jobs than men. Studies have additionally tested that though girls use electronic devices like computers and cameras the maximum amount as men the feminine role in commercials is rarely seen as business
professionals.
Across several of the ads, boys and men
were placed in elevated positions of masculine power and strength
compared to ladies and girls, who were usually delineated
as passive, submissive participants hooked into, or seeking the approval of, men. It's men who drive the action
of a selected scene—such
as a dinner night out—or are the center of attention—such as a
father holding his baby on his shoulders, and his wife looks at him with
adoring eyes and always looks up to him.
Advertisement is
a very persuasive and great tool that can change people's perspective towards a
particular thing. Usually, consumers use advertisements to sell their products
to consumers easily. Advertisements make products attractive and they make it
easier for the producers to sell their products. Also, through advertisements,
people gain information and knowledge which helps them in making the correct
decision.
Today in this age
of media smash, it's insolvable to underestimate the impact and significance of
advertising in informing, guiding, and prevailing every person who's exposed to
it. Over a period, women have been portrayed in multitudinous ways and forms by
the advertising world. But the depiction of women in advertisements has changed
depending on the competitive business in the global market and the consumers.
In utmost of the advertisements, we see that women are portrayed as housewives,
mothers, caretakers, and companions to men, substantially promoting home
products, and food particulars or furnishing support for the relish of men's
products similar to deodorants or aftershaves.
However, now the
representation of women in Indian ads is slowly improving and it has become
slowly normal that men can also do chores and household work. But still, there
is a lot of work to do to improve this situation completely and to fully erase
the image of women as only houseworkers from society. The ads which show women
in subservient roles should be removed and banned completely and ads should be
improved.
